Hello and welcome back everyone I'm Lloyd Johnson and today I'm making a video, by request, about my little super tiny vintage jewellery collection and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, because I find a little odd to go through the drawers and just pick out some pieces and show them to you.
So I thought about picking out my favorited pieces of jewellery, pieces that mean something to me and have a little story to them and I wanted to start with these earrings here. There's a vintage original clip earrings from the 1950s and I managed to grab them from a table at a super tiny flea market, here around the corner and I'm living in Northern Germany and in the smaller towns here you can actually find pieces like these, very often, sometimes they actually hurt, that's a little problem with the clip earrings because if I find a pair of clip earrings that I really love it's mostly an obstacle to wear them all day long, because after about 2 or 3 hours my ears really hurt and I feel that they're absolutely sitting too tight. So in this case I'm really lucky, these are really cute, they're with lavender coloured little stones and there are some other pieces that sure have a really special meaning to me. For example, these super cute mid-1950s clip earrings in cream colour and gold. I got these from my grandmother, my grandmother gave me them shortly before she passed away, so this is this is actually the last piece of her that I received and that I cherish since so many years now. As a woman you might want to try pearls once in a while, in this case I'm really happy that I’ve found them, also they're vintage and I felt and the little thrift shop and although they're certainly not the real deal, they're original and they're from an elderly lady, so definitely something old and truly vintage and I personally love when the colour of pearls is not completely pure white, but a little more beigey or just down toned a little bit, sometimes looks better on extremely pale skin unless you're a truly classic winter type. Winter type, maybe you're Dita Von Teese type with very black hair, very pale skin and absolutely can wear white perfectly but in my case, I'm not really winter type, a warm type and with dark blonde hair so and the very pale skin, so it's very difficult to find pearls that absolutely fit to me and match my type. So in this case I'm really happy if I find some pearls that a little more beige and have a warm undertone and I also have found these earrings that I'm very proud of. They're also very small clip earrings, silver, simple they're from the late 50s and I wear them a lot. I think some people just have preferences when it comes to jewellery and I as you can hear, have a problem saying the word jewellery. Jewellery, I'm very sorry if I sound weird today because this is really actually a word in English that I can almost not pronounce, but if you know my videos already, that you know that sometimes mixing up a lot of words and I thought I'm showing you also pieces that are not originally vintage, but match a, vintage output perfectly fine and if you're into the maybe 1930s 1940s era, you must have seen in footage or pictures or somewhere else, that many women back then would also for formal occasions where necklaces that were a little more prominent. Often of course it was diamonds and stuff like that, I found this necklace and I really love to wear in the case of an evening occasion, more formal occasion. Another piece that I found also in New York City and the same shop was this bracelet and I absolutely love the design and the colour is super beautiful and it looks a bit more like in 1920's, 1930's bracelet. I truly love it and treasure it very much and while I'm talking about traveling, I also wanted to show you pair of earrings. Again that I love very, very much especially in summertime. I found these wonderful earrings on the Heathrow Airport in London, I had two hours between flights and I didn't know what to do with myself so I had a few coffees and was a little bit over the top with my energy and then I came across a little jewellery shop and then I found these beautiful things. They have a beautiful soft design, they're gold coloured with rhinestones and why I'm showing you these pieces, that are not originally vintage, is because you can add those modern style pieces as well perfectly fine to your vintage outfits and one of the really special pieces of my inherited jewelleries, is this one here. It's a long amber necklace that I inherited from my grandfather, actually he gave it to me while he was still alive, years and years ago and he brought it back to Germany from Latvia. When I got it from him I was about 15 years old I didn't really like amber because I thought it was sort of an old folks jewellery piece and didn't really want to wear it to anything, especially not to school. Nowadays it really experiences a revival, because many people who love retro stuff and vintage outfits, truly rely on those things that are great grand mothers and grandmothers would wear, but if you're a tourist in you're ever in Germany and you're looking for amber on the beach then absolutely be sure to be very, very careful. Because there are a lot of accidents here with tourists who are watching the beach and looking for amber and when they find a piece, they believe it's amber that can as well be mistaken with phosphorous from the wartime. The wartime prosperous bombs would fall down into the Baltic sea and the little pieces of that remained in the sea and sometimes land at the coast and what it does is that it can set you actually on fire and the problem is that you can’t run into the water because as soon as you get out you catch fire again. So we have burning accidents and severe burnings and the past few years, the tourists and so I do hope that there is a lot more information around in the future to keep tourists warned and save them from harm. So if you ever look for those kinds of amber then please be sure that it can look just like phosphorus and you can't really determine the one from the other, but I guess if you find the real thing and you have a wonderful piece of jewellery like this and it also reminds you of someone special in your life. That's the perfect real deal. When it comes to brooches I must say that this is the piece that really can make an outfit look vintage, even though it's modern. Sometimes brooches are a little more heavy and if you have for example, a fine silk blouse on and then you it push the needle through the fabric, that can of course be a little tricky. One of the heavier pieces that I own is this route and you might have seen it sometimes in my videos on my outfits as well as in photos that I post mostly in Instagram, is from the early 1950s and unfortunately some of the rhinestones fell off. After a while after I’ve used it quite a lot and so I went out and bought some superglue, well it didn't turn out too good, there are still stones missing but the fingers got stuck together. So maybe I’ll try it another time again, something else I wanted to show you is again a pair of clip earrings that I’ve also found a flea market and those are from the very early 1950s and the thing is that they're actually also signed. I found something on the internet for a change they're signed listener earrings and this piece really has a beautiful design, that is very classic. You can wear this of course to a business output whatever or on a daily basis, but I truly enjoy them on a special occasion and that is definitely something I enjoy. With vintage jewellery that you can have this super simplest outfit, it doesn't have to be pricey, it doesn't have to be special or from a designer. You just take what you have and then add a beautiful piece of accessory to it like a gold bracelet or gold necklace and they can completely lift yourself up and become super classy from your whole look and look sophisticated and well put together. So those were my favorited pieces of my tiny vintage jewellery collection and I would love to share a new pieces that I find in the future with you as well on Pinterest or on Instagram, where I mostly post any kind of outfits or stuff that I find. A round of vintage pieces and retro styled stuff so maybe you want to take a look and at my Instagram account and find some more inspiration for whatever you want to combine of vintage pieces and I hope that this video. Also make you a little more interested in vintage jewellery and gave you an insight and what you can combine and what really can work also from modern pieces that you can add a spin to jewellery pieces if you like so everything works as long as you like it and I hope that you visit me again very soon here back on my channel and thank you so much for watching bye, bye. Welcome to beads jar, my name's Billy and for today's project I'm going to show you how to make this very cute little charm, grace bird bracelets. We're going to use for this project some silver crimp beads, some seed beads and we've got two five millimetre jump rings, a lobster clasp, these very beautiful little bird sterling silver charms and our star just six millimetre beads. I'll be working with a seven strand cable wire with a nylon coat over the top and tool wise, we've got two pairs of flat nose pliers and a pair of side cutters as well.
The first thing I'm going to get you to do is pop a crimp bead onto the wire. Now this is a really good project if you've not done jewellery before as it's quite nice and straightforward. So all we do is place this little metal bead on the end of the wire and use the flat nose pliers and we're just going to crush that bead. So you just want to get on top of the bead and then you just squeeze that, and as you crush it, it comes onto the wire and it shouldn't move. So I’ve got my crimp bead on that and the first thing I'm going to do is thread my little charm on to the wire. I'm now going to add 11 of my Stardust beads onto the wire next to it so this is going to be one side of our beading project. I've said 11 but obviously it depends on the length, so this is going to create half of the bracelet length on this side, so you're just going to thread it away. Obviously you might need to add more or even less, depending on the size of the bracelet that you require. Okay so I’ve got my eleven beads on there, five, ten, eleven and I'm also going to now add three seed beads onto the end of my wire, just about there. We're now going to attach the fastening on to this end of the wire before we go back to the opposite side and reattach the fastening there. So all we've done is strung the beads, but I’ve popped that crimp bead so they can't all fall off the end. Take your jump ring and a pair of flat nose pliers and you're going to hold one side of the pliers and make sure the split of the ring is facing upwards. You're then going to use another pair of pliers to hold the opposite side and then you push one side away and bring one towards you. To open up the jump ring, take the loop end of your clasp and then we're going to go through the clasp and then we're going to close this jump ring back together. When you close it back together you do the reverse of how you opened it and that way you end up with a nice clean seal and there's no overlapping on the jump ring. Go back to the wire that didn't have the crimp bead on and this time we're going to put another crimp bead onto this wire. This is going to be next to our beads and then you want to take the wire end so the crimp beads here and we're going to take the end of the wire through the jump ring, that we attached to the clasp, to up through the jump ring. You then bend the wire back on itself so you're going once through the jump ring and then we're going to take those ends through the crimp bead. So about twice through the crimp bead, so go through, through the jump ring and then back out through the crimp bead. Hold those two ends together and then you want to pull the crimp bead all the way up to the jump ring, get it as close as you can, because we don't want a big loop of wire on show. So we've pushed that up to the jump ring and then using the flat nose pliers, we're going to crush that crimp flat. Nice firm crush and the jump, so the crimp bead won't move along the wire. You then want to let the beads fall back along the wire and into the tail end, so the tail end is going to be tucked inside these beads, you can cut it off but sometimes doing that gives you a bit of a scratchy end at the end of your project and that can irritate the skin. So personally, I find it better to took it inside and that way it's hidden from being scratchy here. So we're just going to let those beads fall down, so that was the half of the bracelet done and then if we swap sides. So I'm just going to flip that round so I'm working to my right, obviously if you're left-handed more comfortable is to work to your left. Using my side cutters I'm just going to remove my little crimp bead that we put on, so the beads don't fall off and then I'm going to string the next 11 metal beads here. So we've got the eleven on and there's the little beautiful cute sterling charm just sat in the centre there, obviously it could replace that with any charm to personalize it for a gift, so something specific to that individual and then before we end the stringing on this side, the three little seed beads are going to go on as well. So they're all going to go down to the seed, to the beads again. So we've got our length that and then we're going to thread our crimp bead on so pop the crimp bead, this time we're not going to stay at the end of the thread we're actually going to drop that down to the seed beads as well. Take our jump ring and I'm just going to hook that on so I'm going to use the clasp, open that and pop the jump ring onto the clasp and then we're going to go through the jump ring, with the wire. Okay just check that and it's still tucked in before we crush anything, so it's all tidy at this side. So we're going to go back through the crimp bead, the three seed beads and then out through the metal bead here. So I'm just taking that wire back through the crimp bead and the seed beads as well. So just going through all of those just do that to show you and that bead as well. Take the tail end off to the side and now I'm going to pull this in, so to help me, I'm just going to use a pair of pliers and the end that's going all the way through is the one I'm holding onto. So I'm going to place my pliers on the wire that's going all the way through this bracelet and then I'm pulling the tail end to bring that in nice and neat, don't want a big loop of wire. Always keep checking as well that this side hasn't popped out because we want that tail end tucked inside. So I'm going to keep pulling, move the pliers and just give that one last pull. As you can see we've got the nice neat loop now formed and I'm just going to cut the excess wire away. So now I haven't crushed the crimp bead at this moment I'm going to take the wire away first and then just pull back a slight bit on the fastener, to tuck that end tidally away. So cut that off and you'll notice that means the end slipped back into that and then we crushed that crimp bead. Now do be careful, you don't want to get the glass ones because they will just crack and we are going to crush the crimp bead flap and that is your very, very, cute sparkly charm bracelet. I’m here with designer Nina Cooper and today we're talking all about charms and Nina you have a really wonderful way of telling a story through your designs. Yes, I like to use charms to tell stories and it's really fun because there's so many different silver charms, so just about any story you're in the mood to tell. So true, you can find a charm group to tell it with.
Right, well you have some beautiful examples here. So this first example is a woodland story and it was really fun. I got all the different creatures and growing things from a forest, so we have birds and acorns, flowers and we also drew in other elements like the gemstones and I've got, even the leather that I used for the cord has a bark tone to it, so it reinforces the whole forest theme. There’s a lot of things going on in this piece and one of the things I like to do is create frames, so placing a charm inside a larger link helps create a space. This bird looks like it's flying through the sky because true, it has a frame. The other thing that's really fun to do, is you can use open spaces like I did here with the tree to hang more dangles. Oh so you're using it more as a connector, exactly and create a richer environment and I love all the different layers you have, some, so many different textures going on here. it really does feel like a forest. Right and that's an important element to bring the texture of the branch and the bird wings. It creates a feel of the forest dominantly. One of the other really fun things to do then, once you create a statement piece like this, you can pull out little elements and create either simple pendants when your earrings and earrings exactly. So, we have I have three different earrings here mm-hmm from very, very simple to more going out at night. Sure and it's fun because sometimes you might wear the earrings without the necklace, but you're never going to wear a necklace without earring. Well that's a really good point and so this way you have three different earrings that match your big statement dramatic piece. I got that idea and so it gives you a lot of wardrobe options, yeah, really does and then you can also pull out little tiny pieces to create more of a conventional charm bracelet and I also use the gemstones as charms here by wire wrapping them on a head pin. So whether you wear these all together or separately, the earrings, the bracelet, the necklace, they're all telling that same woodland story, exactly, and you can customize it however you want for your mood so and even the colours they all just work really well together. While we're talking about colour, this necklace is a lovely example of mixing some different colours. I'm a really big fan of mixed metals, I think that the gold and silver really complement each other and some people think that's a no-no, but I love it. We like to break the rules too. Yeah it's got to break the rules, this necklace also demonstrates some other powerful techniques. One is just the repetition of shape, and varying the size. You can see the same leaf on your bracelet, that's another great way to use something like that. So on the bracelet we have the front and the back, you're using a charm as a connector here again. Right, which also I've done in the bracelet, on the bottom using it as a link. So you've actually wire wrapping right here and wire wrapping directly to the charm. I clipped off the jump rings on this one and then finally using the frame technique, like on the earrings, you can put any charm in the middle of the frame and it sets it off, just like you'd frame a picture. Oh that's so true and it's amazing what a big difference that really does highlight it and this piece is just gorgeous too. I love this necklace, it really, you can tell that all these winged things are taking flight here. Yes, the story there is a summer field and the birds and the butterflies are flying through the field and the chain creates that eerie sense of space. You’re right, it is of more whimsical or ethereal kind of feeling. Exactly, what about this theme you have here, about the way you combine the charms. The gears, this is nice because it demonstrates that charms can also be more modern and edgy mom and trendy. So this is a steampunk theme and we also brought in the leather, which is nice because it gives it that more urban feel. sure yeah and that's very popular right now and on the last piece that you have over here, it seems like you've combined the charms more as links again but it's in a totally different way than the leaf necklace that we saw. Exactly, so these are lotus charms but instead of focusing on the story of the Lotus I more focused on the shape and cluster them together to create a dramatic look and the little rubies on the bottom really bring that out. now you're using a lot of jump rings in that piece, so maybe if you could just take a moment here to show us how to connect these pieces using your jump ring. I know that a lot of times we're using charms with jump rings it's kind of, I don't know peas and carrots, and they go together. They do, you can either use jump rings or you can wire wrap the jump rings are nice because they create a very close connection. It’s very clean, so that the focus is really on the piece that you, the charm that you're working with, so even this branch is telling the story, exact your charms exactly, so ideally every element that you're using in your piece is part of telling the story. so I've slipped them both on and you want to be really careful that all of your elements are facing the right direction. oh right on, jump rings are pretty forgiving because you can open them up again if you make a mistake. oh yeah and then you just put them back together when you're ready to tell a story. You really need to be thinking about the charm, the colours, the connectors, the stringing materials. Every single layer of this can really be a piece of that whole entire story that you're telling with the charms. One final hint, is that if you lay everything out ahead of time you can see how it's going to lie, make adjustments before you do your final connections. That’s a great tip well thank you so much Nina. Hey guys so today I wanted to teach you how to rock the arm party, otherwise known as layering gold bracelets and I understand that this can be a little bit difficult. It's a trend, it's super in right now and it's super easy to pull off, but because there's so much going on, on one arm, I understand it might be a little bit hard as you know, what looks good together, how can I pair it right, what's going to look right on me.
So I just wanted to give you guys a couple tips tricks and pointers, in addition to a couple of general ideas of what you could try to do. First thing is that when you do an arm party, you only want to do it on one arm, two arm parties it's going to look a little bit, often people aren't going to know which arm to look at. If you want to do the arm party, it gives you one arm and leave the other one bare or do one arm, maybe accessorize with a few rings or do one arm and then just do a very simple statement piece. You could do you know a whole bunch of crazy stuff here and then just one more natural piece or one more statement piece. Not something that's way out there, though of course you can totally break the rules, but those are some general guidelines so that people are focused just on that one area of your body. Also it doesn't matter which arm it is, no it's totally up to your discretion. So arm parties can be worn formal, casual or anything in between. So it really depends on where you're going, what you have on hand and how you feel comfortable. So now I’ll give you a couple pieces and the first one is actually to use a watch and I have two here obviously, one would be more formal, so the more formal watch and this would be a little bit more casual and men's watches were super, super in last season. This is just a way to bring that trend into an arm party so I'm going to put these on. Kind of layer it up with what I’ve got around here and I will show you exactly why I chose to do what I did. Here is one way to rock a watch as an arm piece and this way is very, very casual and very chunky. Since I’ve chosen a chunky watch I want to go with some chunky bangles these are very, very big. You could use any texture or pattern that you do happen to have on hand, but I decided to pair them up, just because it gives a little bit of definition. In addition these are a couple of gold bangles and I just like to put these at the end to kind of bring in this gold again. So here is our arm party with little red accents to the rest of our look, maybe red skinny jean along with this top, this is a super cute way to pull this off. Another great example would be to stick to a plain or basic colour here. Since my watch is gold, I decided to stick with some golds and a little bit of neutral colour such as black and a little bit of brown. So here we have a wrap bracelet, we have some pearls, of course our gold watch, a black bangle, a kind of black and gold bangle and a chain. So this would be another way to rock the arm party and of course you could do this with silver jewellery as well or any other colour watch that you have. This is just another way to kind of rock that stacking trend and really make a statement with what you're wearing on your arm. This is a little bit more edgy and casual, but you could definitely dress it up as well depending on what you have available to you. If you're not a big fan of bracelets that sign up and down your arm, you can definitely try something like this. I think that this is a super cute look that's very boho and very earthy and the best part is that it stays put. These are all scrunchie bracelets so they tend to stay in place and then this is almost like a big claspy bangle and it just kind of tends to hold its shape. So I think that this is really adorable, it's very flirty and feminine and fun and keep in mind you can always mix these up to get exactly the look that you're trying to achieve. Another great option is to play with themes, so I'm going to show you a couple of different options here as well. This is the first one that I think is absolutely adorable, since Saint Patrick's Day is just around the corner, I think that this is a great way to kind of rock the trend and use just a couple of dainty pieces that kind of give it that same feel. This is just like a small bangle, this is really where it all comes together. We have a little bit of kind of like a charm in there. This one happens to be from jewel mint, he's like a key bracelet, kind of like key to my heart or something cute like that, but this is another way to really just kind of give a pop and a festive feel to whatever it is that you're rocking that day. Another really cute idea for you to play around with memory. What I’ve done is taken a couple pieces that mean a lot to me, these are a couple of bangles and I just love bangles in general but also my boyfriend's Indian. Some of these I just got, I believe I got them online. This is actually a piece from jewel mint and as you guys can see it's just cute little hearts. This is actually a very special bracelet, my boyfriend gave this to me, it has my birthday and only it's 11, the date that he gave it to me or the year he gave it to me and then I also have a big old charm bracelet and the reason that this really works is, because this takes a bunch of sentimental things and puts them all together in one place for a really fun and flirty look. It's really sentimental as well, you guys don't have a boyfriend, don't feel limited at all. You could also do something like this heart bracelet and maybe a charm bracelet and then maybe some friendship bracelets. So don't feel limited to relationships or not, you can do friendships, you can do cats, you could do something special like that as well, but hearts are a great way to bring all that in together and even though this is silver and this is gold, it brings that pop of silver to this gold and even the hearts pick up on each other. The last tip I have for you is to break the rules, throw all of your bracelets out in front of you and just kind of work with whatever goes together. The biggest thing you can do is break the rules, try pairing gold and silver together, try pairing a really expensive golden or diamond bracelet with a piece from the dollar stores. It's like 99 cents and full of those fake plastic beads, throw things out in front of you and see what works together and what goes with what you're wearing. This is a little bit more nautical, we have a couple of nautical colours kind of like a seashell or ivory and then this is actually a bracelet ring, but it almost looks like a net. So just work with what you have and have fun with it. Of course there are tons of other ways to do this and if you guys want to go check out the blog I actually have a post where I show you some photo inspiration from where I got the inspiration for some of these looks and where you can go to get other bracelets. Hi welcome to the online jewellery Academy. I'm Professor John R and I'm your instructor. In a previous video we visited the Monte Cristo trade corporation in the heart of the LA Jewellery District and there we met Greg the resident expert who showed us how Monte Cristo produces gold chains for clients using some very, very interesting machines, but some of you might have noticed that those links in that gold chain were not soldered shut.
Now when you hand make a chain, of course you're going to manipulate things so that every single link is soldered. Well in this video, you're going to see exactly how Monte Cristo solders those links shut, but to clue you in, after that chain is made it’s tumbled with a powder that has a soldering alloy in it. That penetrates the small little cavities in between the elements that are the ends of the chain and then well you'll just have to watch the rest of the video. So let's go and check it out. We're here in the annealing and soldering department and Monte Cristo and I'm with Greg the expert. Greg can you tell me what this big machine is for? This machine here is chiefly to solder solid gold chains that have been made with the machine and basically a soldering up chain goes in one end, after it's been tumbled and packed full of solder, comes out finished on the other end. So let me break this down. So we start with chain from the chain making department. Yeah it then gets tumbled with a powdered alloy that will solder it. Yes and then you feed it through the ovens, and how long does the process take? Well you can run several feet of per minute of gold chain depending on thickness and material. Wow, so you can produce soldered links by the yard for clients. Yes, that is amazing and this works with wire as well for annealing. For annealing wire we'd go over to this machine. This is what we use for all of the most of the annealing. I should say and this is a perfect environment inside here with no oxygen or contamination and it gets up to whatever temperature we pre-set it to, and then afterwards if it needs to be quenched, there's also a dunk tank it at the end of it. So you can put perfectly clean bright shiny wire into this, yes anneal it to soften it and it comes out perfectly clean bright and shiny with no oxidation. Now that's a miracle but I really want to see this machine operate. Do you have any chain you could run through? We do, cool let's see it now. This chain has already been packed with solder. You basically put that chain through these rollers here which pulls it on and through to this machine. So the chain is being drawn through right now, you know I'm assuming it gets annealed and then soldered. It gets heated up similar to being annealed, goes all the way through the machine and by the time it reaches about the three quarter point is where it's finally being soldered and this is like the other machine that does the annealing. It has a perfect environment inside, it is perfect environment, no contamination, no oxygen it's all burnt out and it comes out as clean as it can be. With the burns all solder that's still some of this may still be on there so there's a minimal amount of clean up necessary. That is a motivation. Well I'm looking forward to seeing it come out the other end. Wow it's only been about a minute and it's already passing through the machine. It's pretty fast, so you can pretty much just feed the chain through and step away and it will solder it automatically. You can, but supervision is required most of the time. Well I very, whoa that's loud, can I pick it up? No, no, no, it's still, it's still hot, it's probably about 800 degrees. Okay well I’ll wait to know to handle it. Does if you liked this video there are plenty more like it on the online jewellery academy. The complete playlist is here on YouTube and you can also find the playlist group by category on the website. You can follow us on Facebook Instagram and Twitter. Don't forget to subscribe, thanks for watching So today I wanted to make a video on accessories, specifically necklaces, and 9ct gold necklaces are something that can make a statement in your look or in your wardrobe and it's also something that adds interest, add something unique to your look. So I definitely recommend any kind of accessories, not just necklaces, but a lot of people like to wear them and people ask me all the time what body shapes suit what necklaces and how can you make your shoulders appear narrower or your bust appear bigger. Your bust appear smaller and those are all things that actually can be solved with something really simple like a necklace, believe it or not.
So I'm going to show you how you can do that, so a lot of girls with a smaller bust ask me how can they make their chest look bigger with the clothes they wear and it actually is possible by using a short chunky necklace like one of these. This one which is from hot Miami styles and this is just made up of lots and lots of strands of beads and this when you add it to a like a low-cut top or any kind of top that is very simple. This is going to make a statement to your look but it's also going to add some embellishment and some padding to your upper body. So it's going to give the illusion that you have a bigger bust. This one this will have the same exact effect and likewise with these short chunky ones, I would stay away from them if you have a really big bust or if you are like an apple shape. So you don't want to look top-heavy, you want to balance at your shape. Here's another turquoise one and this one isn't so bad like this could be okay if you have a bigger bust, just be careful if you have broad shoulders because the smaller the necklace, the broader your shoulders are going to look. This is another one that was given to me by a friend and this again is a really good option for use a small chest, especially if you are pear-shaped so if you're bigger on bottom then you are on top and you want to balance out your frame and give the illusion of like a proportion of body shape, so like an hourglass or something. I thought you could just throw on one of these and it's definitely going to add volume to your upper body and it's going to balance it out really nicely. So moving on if you have a big bust or wide shoulders you want to not prayer that area at all, so you don't want anything really short or really chunky up there, because you don't want to add volume to it and make your top look a lot bigger. So I suggest going with a long necklace like this, one that's going to totally elongate your frame and elongate your upper body as well, so that's really good if you have a short torso or if you have like a problematic midsection or anything like that. This is going to create a vertical line and it's going to really make your upper body appear thinner. So this is from Santa pay it's really pretty and then I also have if you like chunky jewellery, chunky necklaces, and feel like you can't wear them because you have a bigger upper body that's fine, you can still wear chunky jewelry, just keep it long. So this is from vero moda and you can tell it's really chunky beads and I like to wear this a lot actually and it really brightens up like a collared shirt. I think that looks really good and just add this to any look and I think it's long enough for somebody with a bigger bust to pull on and I have something like this which is kind of chunky on bottom and thinner on top. This would look really good too, this is from secret conquest also have this for you pretty one from a sauce and I love this because it's got ribbons and like a chain detail in it and again this will look really good and really flattering if you have a bigger upper body. I also have this beaded one and it's really long and this is from a boutique in Blackheath in London and this one I like because if you do like the short hairstyles but you have a bigger bust, there's a solution. You don't have to avoid them completely because obviously there are no rules in fashion and you can do whatever you want and dress whatever way makes you feel good. So I'm going to show you a simple solution if you’re like me, like the shorts, the short chunky style but you have a bigger bust and I don't have like a really big one but so how to do, so what I do is I just double it and have one short and one kind of long. So it looks like that, but it kind of gives the illusion that it has long half short and chunky and it's good for you if you have bigger bust because it's not going to make you look really top heavy or anything like that and it's still a nice detail, at you know playing shirt. So this here is a choker and this is from months. You accessorize I mean sorry, so it looks like that and I definitely wouldn't suggest chokers for anyone with broad shoulders because it makes your shoulders width broader, so stay away from them. If you do, otherwise if you've gotten our shoulders by all means, wear chokers if that's your style. So I hope this video helped you guys determine which necklaces suit which body shapes and I will talk to you in my next one, bye. Hi, this is Julie with beadaholique.com and we’ve got an exciting show and tell for you today. This is probably one of the hottest trends we’ve seen in a really long time and that trend is adjustable bangle charm bracelets. There's a bunch of different styles out there and we've collected all of them here in the video to show you the difference between the different styles and also just that you have a lot of choice.
So this here is one style and here's an example of use and the way it works and I show you how it works actually on one it's not decorated. Is you have these two loops and then they crisscross and you pull it apart to get it on and off your wrist and to adjust it and you can attach charms and baubles to the outside, you can attach it to the middle bars or if you want to just take a chair chain nose pliers and just I'm going to show you actually really quickly how to do this. Just crimp that a little bit tighter, close together you can then attach to the loop as well, so a lot of different options and where you place your beads and your charms. It's really going to dictate how these bangles are worn and how they are move around. So if you, like in this example of use, you'll see that the ones attached to the centre stay in the centre and then the ones on the outer side outside ring can move around and when you wear them gravity will usually cause them to go down towards the base, but as your wrist moves throughout the day they will of course shift and play and make this wonderful little jingly sound. This is one style of bracelet, it comes in a couple different metal finishes as you can see here. Here's a sports themed one, you can really put a lot of charms on these or you can put just a couple, it's totally up to you, but it's really fun to customize these and then what a lot of times you'll see happening is people wearing multiple of these at once. I have this one here which is this yoga themed set and it's actually three different bracelets. I'm going to put them all on, you wear them together, now they can match, they don't have to, that's part of the fun is you can have a whole collection of these, some that match, some that don't and you can just have them stacked on your wrist. So this is one style with the two loops, another style is this here which has two balls and the centre ring. Now this one you have a couple different options of where you want to hang your charms. You can hang them from the ring which is right here, which keeps those actually very steady and solid. You can put them to the right or the left side of the ring. Now if I put it over here it would slide around which is great and that's one look but by putting it to the right of the loop, that ball stops it and here is a really good example of how you can personalize this. This is just a little charm with an initial on it, so if you're giving this as a gift that might be something you want to think about. So you add all the decorations but then you can add that little initial charm and it becomes a very nice personalized piece of jewellery. This comes in a couple of different colours, you can see we've got the silver and the gold. Here's another style and this is by becky nunn, this is a nun design adjustable bangle and you can see she's got multiple loops, which really does expand the possibilities of where you want to hang things. So you can hang them from the inside bars, each of the loops or the outer ring and we have an example of use here as well. So a antique silver plate, antique gold plate and then a bright silver plate and you can see that we've got these great charms and baubles and they've been hung at the different loops so that keeps them permanently spaced. You have some floating on the inside and then you have another one on one of the outer loops as well, a lot of different options. One thing you do want to keep in mind is don't load this so full that you can't stretch it, that would be my one tip on these is you don't want to make that so tight and tightly packed with baubles and charms that you cannot open these and get them on your wrist. Another style is this one here, this has one loop and then it has a little ball and you can then because here's a little 4 millimetre jump ring that's attached to this little dangle and that's not going to go anywhere, so you actually do have the option of putting items on the bar here that single arm bar and then here's just a simple wire loop, so you don't have to connect everything with a jump ring. If you make your simple loop big enough you can put it right on to the wire itself, you see that's adjustable comes in several different colours and you'd wear these stacked as well and actually it's fun to mix and match all these styles. You don't have to just have three or five of one style, you can mix and match and play around and then here's an older style adjustable bangle that we've had for a while and this is nice because the ball screws off and if you have a bead with a large enough hole such as these metal Stardust beads or this european-style large hole bead, you can just slide it on and then replace that ball and then it just catches on that little hook and then you have your bracelet ready to go and then when you're opening it because of that ball is going to stop the beads from falling off. So a lot of different options right now with these adjustable bangles, have fun with them really play around, it is fun to make a themed set but you don't have to. You can definitely mix and match, mix metals, mix themes, you're going to want to have a bunch of these and you know they are a great gift this is the holiday season coming up, these are perfect to make as a very personal gift for someone who's into fashion is very fashion-forward. So you can find these as well as all the accessories to go with them at beadaholique.com One of the great things about shopping with Chain Me Up is that nearly all of the jewellery can be customised to your own style. I’m here with Mark Nelson and we’ve been talking about colour and Mark, you’re going to show us some important things about different colours with gold. That’s right, gold can come in a wide array of colours in different forms. So I want to kind of talk with you a little bit about alloyed gold, plated gold particularly and what also what they call gold filled. So let’s get started. We’re going to start with what they call an alloy which is pure gold mixed with other metals like silver, copper or maybe zinc in order to obtain strength or a difference of colour. When we’re looking here, this is actually 22 karat gold, so it’s very rich in yellow, it’s mostly gold, there’s very little silver in it. It’s still an alloy, but there’s very little other material. Right, it’s mostly gold. Right next to that we have a yellow 18 karat, so we have a little less gold, little paler yellow in colour but still quite beautiful and has a nice rich colour. Next to that is the same thing in white gold. Same amount of gold but by adding, say more silver or nickel or something else we’ve actually turned it into a white metal. Oh, so by adding the other metals into that alloy, that’s what changes the colour. That’s what changes the colour, same amount of gold. Unless we go down to like maybe 14 and now we have a little but less gold and more of the other metals like silver, zinc, copper and things like that. There again it comes in yellow and it also comes in white gold as well. There again, same amount of gold, no difference but just different types of metal on the other end. I think a lot of people probably don’t realise that it’s the same amount of gold but the other materials are what changes the colour. Exactly, if we look at this tray over here you can see a wide range of different colours. There’s rose gold which means there’s a lot of copper in the alloy. Every one of those squares has the same exact amount of gold, just different amounts of the others. Wow, so you can just see a different range of colours here that are available within the same range of gold. It has the same properties. Just changes the colour. Sometimes there’s a difference in the workability, but mostly it’s colour. You have green, yellow, red, so primarily it’s a design choice. It really is. There’s other types of gold too and if you look on the board, we can see it right here, is gold filled. This is a layer of say, 14 karat that’s been bonded to a base metal. I’ll explain more of that in just a sec. Next to that is what they call Vermeil, now to be called Vermeil there’s a plating process of 22 karat gold or 14 or whatever. But it has to be a certain thickness on sterling. It always has to be on sterling right? Right. Some items are plated onto base metals, sometimes, but for it to be called Vermeil, it has to be on sterling. And then right next to that we have some basic plated items, and these can be plated, like you said, onto anything base metal, mostly brass, They can range from a little bit like a heavy plate to a thinner plate. Can you talk a little bit here about people who have allergies and where that comes into play with making these choices? That’s a great question, especially with the white gold. In order to get that white colour, sometimes what they’ll do is add nickel. A lot of people have nickel allergies and it would cause a rash. So that’s something to look out for if you prefer the look of white gold. You just need to watch out if you have that. Ask for an alloy made with palladium. It’s in the platinum group of metals and it’s hypoallergenic and much better for allergies. As far as when you’re creating jewellery and you’re using some of these different shades of gold you want to keep in mind to maintain the quality of the piece and use the same. If you were to go let’s say with the 22 karat piece, don’t add a plated item on to that, because it would de-value your work. You want to keep it at the same level by using the same all the way through. Step us through the plating here. If you look on this little chart here we can go through the different types of metals that are available. We have a gold bonded metal, which is a high karat gold layer, like 22 karat that’s bonded to Argentium. It’s a very thick sheet of metal and has a long wearability. So that’s making gold stronger because it’s the soft metal. Exactly, it’s the silver giving it some strength in that way. Then below that you’re going to have some gold filled. Gold filled can be 14 karat, 10 karat, 12 karat and both of these are notated by weight. You’ll have 1/6th the weight, 1/20th the weight. What does that mean? That means 1/6, let’s look at the bonded metal, 1/6th of the weight is going to be gold, of the total weight. If you go with gold filled, typically it’s around 20, so 1/20th of the total weight is going to be gold. OK, and why is that important? That’s so when you sell it the customer knows exactly how much they’re getting in the value of it. So it’s important to be clear with your customers if you’re selling your jewellery. Also as a buyer I like to know. What about the plating there? Plating, well let’s start with gold plated which is the thinnest, it’s about 2 millionths of an inch thick. It’s very thin. Followed by heavy plating which is 40 millionths of an inch thick and then Vermeil has to be 100 millionths of an inch thick. That’s a legal definition. It has to be at least that thick on sterling to be called Vermeil. I love the look of Vermeil personally. I do too, I love the rich yellow colour. Really pretty. So these are some of the different ways you can use the tones of gold and this was really educational. I hope so, thank you.
